This will be the second time that Zines of the Zone collective has come to Tabakalera. The Kerozine Tour, which got its start in Pau, is making a stop in San Sebastián as part of this must-see activity organised by Ubik, the creation library, and the bookshop Tobacco Days. This is a unique chance to see their collection and learn more about their project.
Since 2014, the Zines of the Zone collection, which got its start in France, has been travelling around Europe to organise temporary displays, concerts and talks through which they propose alternative forms of exhibition. Their aim is to disseminate the idea of DIY ("do it yourself") to artists from different contexts and to interested audiences, as well as to facilitate access to publications that often have limited print runs and become sold out quite quickly.
Self-publishing has seen an incredible boom in the last decade. Caught between the tradition of what is the artist's book and the activism of punk fanzines, this practice is multifaceted and reflects several influences. Photobooks, fanzines and photozines, going beyond simple inclusion of photography, pose a reflection that revolves around the physical qualities of the object/book as an artistic means. Likewise, said boom over the last fifteen years has made it necessary to re-think the channels of dissemination and circulation.
In this context, Zines of the Zone came to be with the desire to establish itself as a public, open, accessible collection to provide visibility to these practices and ensure their enjoyment.
* Zines of the Zone invites local artists and editors to enrich the collection with their own photobooks and fanzines.
