Data Commons Lab is a production space for analysing and viewing data:

  • A space which is a continuation of the data work carried out in various Hirikilabs workshops throughout 2016 and 2017.

  • A laboratory for examining information such as data commons. These should be looked after and managed jointly by the citizenry, governments and the private sector, and at times must be liberated or protected from fencing or other types of appropriation.

  • A production laboratory for learning whilst doing using data analysis and display, enabling an objective and rigorous understanding of complex realities by producing multiple graphic representations of the data.

  • A people’s laboratory and a meeting space for sharing knowledge and doubts from different disciplines and interests, and for experiencing new methods of collaborative organisation and production and data management.

  • A laboratory for analysing and understanding local contexts and for connecting these with communities working in other places.

Data Commons Lab envisages the formation of an open and stable working group. This autonomous group will work on a specific interest, and this approach already works well in Hirikilabs in other areas. In this case, the group will bring together people with a diverse range of interests and knowledge in the field of information, data and data display. They will be capable of establishing their own dynamics and focus, and of organising themselves. The group will hold regular online and in-person sessions.
